ASU's West campus hosts 'Science Saturdays' for kids

Mar. 17, 2005

Arizona State University’s Department of Integrated Natural Sciences will offer family-oriented science workshops at ASU’s West campus on Saturday mornings, beginning April 9. Additional sessions are scheduled for April 23 and May 7.

The workshops, designed for children ages 5-11 with accompanying adults, are led by Janet Painter, instructional specialist in ASU’s New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. Before coming to ASU, Painter was host of a popular Illinois children’s science TV show called “Dr. Janet’s Science Planet.”

According to Painter, the light-hearted workshops take a simple approach to common science knowledge such as how DNA copies itself, static, acids and bases, magnetism and chemical reactions. “Most workshops will be messy—you may want to wear old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty,” Painter advises.

For $10, adults may register with up to three children by calling the department office at (602) 543-6050. Workshops run from 9-11 a.m. and are held at ASU’s West campus in the Classroom Lab/Computer Classroom building (CLCC), room 352.

Painter holds a doctorate in physiological and molecular plant biology from the University of Illinois.

ASU’s West campus is located at 4701 W. Thunderbird Rd., Phoenix.

Details of the “Science Saturday” program, including subjects, maps, parking directions, are available online at: www.west.asu.edu/lifesci/scienceworkshops.htm.
