Lichens are a great example of mutualism. This is a form of symbiosis where two organisms have a close relationship and both of them benefit.

upperwf3.jpg (124429 bytes)Lichens consist of a fungus and alga cells. The fungus is the container. It protects the lichen from tough environmental conditions. The algae contains chlorophyll. It is able to carry out photosynthesis and supply itself and the fungus with nutrients.
