Mission

TRiO Academic Achievement Center is a federally funded TRiO program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and serves 240 students. TRiO Academic Achievement Center at ASU's West campus is one of more than 900 Student Support Services programs in the United States and its territories and has been providing assistance and services to first generation, low income, and disabled students since 1993. The goal of TRiO Academic Achievement Center is to increase the retention and graduation rates of participants and to assist in the process of transitioning to the next level of higher education.

TRiO programs were created under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and expanded in following years by other acts and amendments (1965, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1986, 1990, 1998) to provide postsecondary educational opportunities to eligible students from middle school through postbaccalaureate degree programs. Currently, there are over 2,600 TRiO grant programs in operation. The Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel (WESTOP) are non-profit organizations that are dedicated to advancing and defending equal educational opportunities in postsecondary education created by TRiO programs. COE and WESTOP work closely with legislators to insure that these educational opportunities continue to exist.

VISION

The TRiO Academic Achievement Center serves as a resource and voice for undergraduate first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities at ASU's West campus. Within a learning environment which challenges students to grow personally and professionally, we nourish a sense of empowerment and strive to bridge the gap between the dream and the reality of achieving a baccalaureate degree.
