Certification for VA Education Benefits each semester is not automatic. Veteran students should stop by Veteran Student Services each semester so their certification and any additional documents can be completed for the next semester. Students also have the option of receiving a VA Promissory Note (fee deferment) from Arizona State University's West campus.
The State of Arizona allows veterans who receive VA Education Benefits to defer (interest free) the payment of tuition, fees, and all necessary textbooks and supplies. This deferment is issued only for the first semester the student applies for educational benefits at ASU.
Textbook deferment for Chapter 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation) only:
While receiving VA Educational Benefits, a student may be concurrently enrolled at more than one school during the same semester. The school from which the student is pursuing a degree will be the Parent School. The student must pick up a Parent School Letter (315) to be filled out by the advisor at the Parent School. This form states that the courses taken at the Supplemental School will be credited toward the current major being pursued. The student is responsible for securing all signatures and delivering the form to both Parent and Supplemental Schools.
Veteran students receiving benefits under the Montgomery G.I. Bill must verify monthly enrollment. Students will receive a Student Verification of Enrollment form from the VA Regional Processing Office in Muskogee, OK. To insure prompt payment of your benefits, please do one of the following steps:
* Students who have not received their Student Verification of Enrollment form or their check should call the Phoenix Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office at 1.800.827.1000. The ASU's West campus Veterans' Affairs has a supply of blank forms. (Federal holidays may delay receipt of the Student Verification of Enrollment and/or check.)
Veterans are restricted to taking courses that meet their educational objectives. Supplemental courses not appearing on a Degree Audit Report require additional documentation from the student's academic advisor.
Students may receive assistance from the VA for individual tutoring. To qualify, a student must have a deficiency in a subject in which he/she is currently enrolled.
If a student collects under the Montgomery G.I. Bill or VEAP, he/she may receive up to $1200, with the first $600 coming from the VA and the last $600 being deducted from remaining educational benefits. A student may only receive a maximum of $100 per month until educational benefits run out.
To apply for tutorial assistance, pick up the appropriate form from West campus Veteran Student Services. Students may also download the form.
This is a tax free employment program, offered through the VA. Students must be enrolled and receiving educational benefits for at least a 3/4-time rate.
